Rance Allen was an American Bishop, Minister, and gospel musician, who became known for his extremely wide vocal range and powerful singing voice. He was the founder and leader of the Rance Allen Group, which was formed in Detroit in 1969, joined by his brothers Thomas and Steve. The group became very popular and influential, known for a different and contemporary Gospel sound. He played piano, guitar, wrote songs and sang with an amazing voice that influenced people.

Rance Allen was born on November 19, 1948, in Monroe, Michigan to Thomas and Emma Pearl Allen, to a family of African American, Afro-Caribbean, and Afro-Latino American heritage. He had 11 siblings: six sisters and five brothers. He had an interest in religion from the very beginning. He started preaching when he was 5 and when he reached his teenage, he had started to preach the whole of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. In 1978, he was made an Elder by the Bishop and he served as the associate pastor in the church in Michigan.

In 1985, the New Bethel Church was founded where Allen was made the Bishop and he served there till he was alive. He was a gifted Gospel singer and a musician. The motive of the Rance Allen Group was to show the world a different and contemporary Gospel sound. The group had performed with many gospel musicians throughout the country, including Andrae Crouch, Marvin Winans, Bebe and Cece Winans, the Clark Sisters, Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, John P. Kee, Fred Hammond, Tye Tribbett, Shirley Caesar, Donnie McClurkin, Bernard Jackson Jr. and Mary McLaurine Glover. They had been nominated for the Grammy Awards as well.

Allen’s voice was God’s gift. He became famous for having created his group in 1969 in Detroit where he was the lead vocalist. He had an energetic voice which used to influence the audience a lot. One of his famous performances was for Barack Obama, the then US President, at the White House Celebration of Gospel Music.

In November 2011, Rance Allen was elevated to the office of Bishop in the Church of God in Christ, for the Michigan Northwestern Harvest Jurisdiction. He was of mixed ancestry- African American, Afro-Caribbean, and Afro-Latino American. Rance Allen had a simple philosophy of life, whatever he felt he used to do but always for the glory of God.

Rance Allen was married to Ellen Marie Allen (née Groves). The two were married on December 1, 1970. The couple had no children together.

Rance Allen died on October 31, 2020, from complications due to a recent medical procedure. He was 71 years old. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Gospel musicians, religious leaders, and people who have faith in God.
