Thomas Grant Gustin, known as Grant Gustin, was born on January 14, 1990, in Norfolk, Virginia, to his mother, Tina Haney, a pediatric nurse, and father, Thomas Gustin, a college professor. Gustin attended the Governor’s School for the Arts program in Norfolk for musical theater during his high school years. He also participated in the Hurrah Players Incorporated, a Virginia-based theater organization. In 2008, Gustin graduated from Granby High School and went on to study in the BFA Music Theater Program at Elon University in North Carolina for two years. Acting Career
Gustin’s first on-screen appearance was in the student film “Rain” (2004) while he was still in high school. The film, directed and produced by Neil Grochmal during his studies at Regent University, featured Gustin as a young mute who helps a man solve the mystery of his wife’s murder.
In 2010, Gustin left school to join the Broadway Revival Tour of “West Side Story” as Baby John. He performed with the tour until September 23, 2011. Gustin’s television debut came on November 8, 2011, as the openly gay Sebastian Smythe in the TV series “Glee.” He originally auditioned for a tap dancer role but was remembered by creator Ryan Murphy for the part of Sebastian.
